COMMON PROBLEMS YOU CAN FIX YOURSELF

man garage door instructionsProblem:

Nothing happens when I press the button .

Try this:

Make sure you are getting power to the unit. See that it’s plugged in or the breaker is not tripped. At times the garage GFI outlet is tripped off so hit the reset on the GFI.

Problem:

The opener is running but the door doesn’t move.

Try this:

The opener is often not engaged. Depending on the type of opener you have you may need to pull up or back on the emergency release cord that hangs just about head level.

Problem:

The door will go up but not down without holding the button.

Try this:

This is likely a photocell problem it could be a faulty cell or it may just be bumped out of alignment so make sure they face each other. Also check that wires were not snagged or cut where you lean all your shovels and rakes in the corner.

Problem:

My door is noisy even though I lubricated it.

Try this:

Usually the intermediate hinges are neglected while the rollers get soaked with lube. Spray lube (no heavy grease) the inner hinges between each section. This will usually do the trick. Also there is a bushing or bearing between the springs over the door, that if dry will make a really loud squeal. Use the straw of your can of lube to shoot in between the springs.

Can I replace a spring or cable myself?

Remember, the door may weigh several hundred pounds; all that weight is carried on the springs by transferring spring tension to the shaft then to the drums to the cable to finally lift the door. All those parts are under tremendous pressure that is extremely dangerous. Do not try to fix a spring or cable yourself!
